For the fourth photojournalism brief we were tasked with capturing an image to accompany an article around food insecurity. My first thoughts on this project were that we would be focusing on people using foodbanks, people who couldn’t afford food etc however, our lecturer advised that he was more concerned with people who were perhaps eating the wrong things and leading an unhealthy lifestyle.
Therefore for this brief I decided to focus on unhealthy lifestyles which include people who stay up late, play video games, drink energy drink, and generally don’t look after themselves nutritionally.
The research for this shoot included:

I liked these images as they showed different unhealthy aspects of gaming including lack of sleep, unhealthy/non-nutritious foods, and drinking highly caffeinated drinks. I wanted to incorporate a bit of everything in my final image and so planned to photograph my friend in the early morning, in his dressing gown playing video games, with lots of empty cans of juice, sweets, and a takeaway bag in the background.
I decided to shoot early morning so that it looked as if he had stayed up all night playing video games, and I felt that the energy juice would also suggest this.
My submission:

This was my final outcome which passed. I used a 1s exposure so that I could blur some of the movement of the can as well as the graphics on the screen. I closed the curtains to make the room seem a bit dingy and I cropped it so that we are mainly focusing on the model and the mess around them.
